pencil pencil pencil

i have tried different methods of starting a painting, but at the moment the one that seems to best suit my needs is doing the penciling first. i am primarily a penciller and that has always been my favorite medium, either for the texture or for the ease of control. it is time consuming, but as a technique, in my opinion there's nothing more impressive than a good pencil work. it shows all the artist's craftsmanship. I've been doing some pencil work before applying the underpainting, which have helped me to have more control over the values and the overall mood of the painting.

(yeah, I have horrible finger nails. besides being an incurable nail biter, they are usually dirty with graphite. never seen any point in nail polishing either. but i almost always had the boys i wanted. :P)

Your artwork is incredible. I too love faces and figures. I work primarily in clay but do some painting. The depth you get in the eyes and details of the faces, expressions, attitudes is amazing. I am glad I found your blog.

I so admire your ability to draw- your pencil work is rich and beautifully expressive. Pencil work really addresses the detail and at the same time the subtleties. Lovely work!

Regardless of the nails :-) your work is very expressive - the details are impressive. Lovely.

I love pencil work too, you have so much control and you can gently and subtly build up layers, and you can get so many different effects with it. LOL over your too, I've never paid much attention to my hands (though I do like to wear rings), they've always been tools to me, devices to create my work, and as long as they do that I'm happy, and I don't care if all the nails are different lengths, or there's paint on them!

thanks Cheryl, Lori, Gypsy! so good to have you here, girls, you are very sweet! :)

Mermaid: we have more things in common, it seems... I never paid attention to my nails either, and frankly I just notice other people's when they look too exotic or unconventional...let's take pride in our nails, they are the proof of our passion!
